They developed a big support base, including Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the modern Turkish nation.In 1923, prior to the formation of the modern Turkish league, Fenerbahçe went through their entire season without conceding; by contrast in the 1988/89 Super League they scored a record 103.The Sarı Kanaryalar won the first modern Turkish title in 1959, beating the team with which they have traditionally vied for local and national supremacy, Galatasaray AŞ. They have since claimed a record-equalling 16 more.Brazilian coaches have been important for Fenerbahçe. Between 1972 and 1975, Didi led them to back-to-back league titles, part of a haul of eight trophies in what represents the most successful spell a coach has ever had at the club. In 2006/07, Zico captured the Turkish crown before leading them to their first UEFA Champions League quarter-final appearance the following season.In 2011, Aykut Kocaman steered Fenerbahçe to an 18th league title, becoming the first person to win the championship both as a player and a manager.
